BLACKSMITH AND SCULPTOR (PA)
As I develop my work as a blacksmith and art-maker, I look for a language in my work, a way of expressing my ideas. I have discovered a language that is based on how shape can communicate emotion and movement. The pieces that I make are meant to convey certain emotions through shape and gesture.
I draw much of my inspiration from natural forms, both animal and plant. I find it interesting how specific shapes can trigger a viewer’s unconscious reaction and can express certain emotions, much like the movement of dancers. The natural world is made up of many shapes and it is the sculptor’s job to use them in beautiful ways to create new ones.
What started with simple welding as a hobby has evolved into a lifelong passion, and now into a career. As my ability grows, so does my interest with this ancient art. The permanence and strength of metal are some of its most attractive characteristics. The process of using heat and force to shape such a solid material is elemental and rich with the opportunity for a spontaneous expression of ideas.
I believe that forged metal work does not yet have enough notice in the worlds of craft or fine art. With growing interest and more new talent, I think we will start to see that change.
