I was introduced to painting when I sixteen months old, when my Artist /Educator Mother put me in the bathtub, with sheets of newsprint taped to the walls, surrounded by tempra paint in baby food jars. I started telling stories about each of my paintings, and later wrote text to accompany them, which is a practice I continue today.
Later, after earning a Bachelor of Arts Degrees from The University of Pennsylvania in Art History and English Literature, I attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and earned an MFA Equivalency. As a Colorist, I followed artists like Bill Scott, Jan Baltzell, Liz Osborne, and Peter Paone, along with earlier generations of Philadelphia painters, such as Jane Piper, Hobson Pitman and Arthur B. Carles. After leaving PAFA, I experimented with using acrylic paint abstractly in innovative ways, as well as employing traditional oil painting techniques to create landscapes and seascapes.
My expressionistic colorist style is punctuated by thick, impasto surface texture that is inspired by nature and travel. Most people associate my work with rural landscapes and garden images, from Tuscany and Pennsylvania Farms, and coastal paintings from Maine, Nantucket, the Jersey shore and Florida, because those places have characterized my work for the last sixteen years. In 1998, I rode a moped from Florence to Rome, through hill towns of Tuscany and fell in love with the gently rolling, colorful fields of sunflowers and poppies that dominate the landscape in summertime there.
In addition to painting, I write about painting and traveling for International Living Magazine, and teach painting and writing to children, teens and adults.
