Camouflage is a recurring theme in my work. What to cover or reveal interests me. I like to paint over old work - only I know what has gone on before. Burying details and letting bits of its former self reveal is provocative for me. A push/pull between the two paintings occurs and what was once the past is now the present.
I'm interested in the relationship with subject and background as its 'protective' shell. Abstracting a subject protects it- a cloak of secrecy. Using references aids this process of layering that can either covers or exposes. The paintings become ever-changing, as is life, and become work between representation and abstraction.
