BATIK ARTIST (PA)
Laura grew up in a household where art supplies were ubiquitous. Her father, an engineer and ceramicist and, later, wood sculptor, had his studio in the home. Her mother, prone to painting murals on the walls and furniture, was a seamstress with a cornucopia of fabrics and notions at the ready. Laura studied art education and art history. Her professional career found her working in design and art direction (where she was recognized by Print and Art Direction magazines and The National Geographic Society) and teaching. She eventually returned to the technique she fell in love with in high school - batik. She developed a unique approach to this ancient practice and creates resist paintings on silk using brushes alternating with dyes and molten wax. She has a successful career as an exhibiting fine artist and has received numerous awards and recognitions.
Her works have shown at the Rosenfeld Gallery in Old City Philadelphia, and at the Woodmere Art Museum, winning the Rochelle Boonshaft Portrait Prize in 2009, Charles Knox Smith Founder’s Prize in 2006 and the Woodmere Endowment Fund Memorial Prize in 2005. In addition she has received awards for exhibited works from The Abington Art Center, Cheltenham Center for the Arts, Plastic Club, MGOPA, Wayne Art Center, ACX, Allens Lane Art Center and Artists Equity.
Works have also been exhibited at B-Square Gallery, Art of the State in Harrisburg at the Pennsylvania State Museum, Lancaster Museum of Art, The Sketch Club, Fireside Gallery, Nichols Berg Gallery, Main Line Art Center, Fleischer Art Memorial and more. Her work is in collections here and abroad.
She has taught art in numerous venues and situations in public and private schools, museums, art centers, intermediate units and served as a volunteer in arts outreach programs throughout Philadelphia and the area. She has also been artist in residence in area schools and museums.
